Capacity Development

Expanding the global ocean science community

BioGeoSCAPES supports capacity development, collaboration, and professional growth across the international ocean science community. Our efforts prioritize early career researchers (ECRs) worldwide and work to expand access to training, networks, and collaborative opportunities for researchers in the Global South.

BioGeoSCAPES Fellows Program

An international cohort program supporting early career researchers worldwide through professional development awards, laboratory exchanges, in-person workshops, networking, collaborative projects, and leadership opportunities. Fellows build interdisciplinary relationships, expand their professional networks, and develop new skills while contributing to BioGeoSCAPES science, governance, and community initiatives. These experiences foster lasting collaborations and help shape the future of BioGeoSCAPES.

BioGeoSCAPES at COESSING

The Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School in Nigeria and Ghana (COESSING) is a UN Ocean Decade-endorsed project supporting capacity development and collaboration in ocean and environmental sciences. For the past three summers, BioGeoSCAPES has supported hands-on omics and microbial biogeochemistry instruction in the Biogeochemistry of Water module, helping participants develop practical skills, build professional networks within the international BioGeoSCAPES community.

Early Career Researcher Leadership

BioGeoSCAPES prioritizes the meaningful participation of early career researchers throughout the program. ECRs have contributed as Science Plan authors and reviewers, providing valuable feedback, and serve across our planning committees, working groups, governance, and community initiatives. We work to ensure that participating ECRs represent diverse research interests, disciplines, perspectives, and geographic regions from across the global ocean science community.
